What is MUN?

Represent, Negotiate, and Solve.

In short...

Model United Nations (MUN) is an UN conference simulation game where participants step into the role of country representatives (delegates) to debate global issues, negotiate solutions, and develop diplomacy, critical thinking, and public speaking skills.

The goal of MUN

  • NEGOTIATE with other delegates, and create a list of resolution called the Resolution Paper (RP). This should be created by two groups.
  • VOTE for Resolution Papers to pass. (sometimes multiple RPs pass at the same time!)

⇒Through writing these RPs, participants can experience the UN decision making firsthand!

What can you get out of it?

  • Strengthens academic English skills in speaking, writing, and formal debate
  • Develops logical thinking and structured argumentation valued in higher education
  • Enhances research and analytical skills through policy-based discussion
  • Builds confidence in expressing ideas in international and academic settings

Procedures of MUN

It usually goes in this order.

Speaker's list

INTRODUCE YOURSELF and your positions, and suggest policies on a given topic (this time, we will talk about AI governance).

Moderated caucus

IMPROVISE A SHORT SPEECH on a specific subtopic. This is where you can express your opinions.

Unmoderated caucus

DISCUSS WITH OTHERS given the opinions shared during the moderated caucus. This is the time for you to talk in groups, and form a team called bloc.

Resolution Paper

WRITE A RESOLUTION with your bloc. Start by first creating a Draft Resolution Paper. After the Resolution paper is done, a bloc must present them.

Voting

PRESENT, VOTE the best resolution paper.

Our Values

Why did we decide to host the first ever English MUN in Tokyo public school?

Why MUN?

Model United Nations (MUN) is a comprehensive educational activity that can be described as an "intellectual triathlon." It cultivates fundamental academic skills such as reading, writing, speaking, and listening while fostering practical abilities such as quick thinking, negotiation, and collaboration. Furthermore, by role-playing as diplomats addressing global issues, students gain a sophisticated understanding of international affairs and the workings of the UN and the relevant international organizations.

Why MUN in Japan?

When we participated in the Harvard MUN (HMUN), we were genuinely struck by how people from different countries and backgrounds could debate on completely equal footing. At the same time, a question stayed with us: how confidently can Japanese middle and high school students speak up on a stage like this?

Although Model UN conferences are held in Japan, access to information and opportunities is still limited to certain circles, and the barrier to entry often feels high. In many Japanese school environments, students also have limited chances to actively use English in real discussions. We wanted to change this reality and create a more open and accessible space where students in Japan can engage in discussions and use English with confidence.

Why MUN in Kokusai HS?

At a time when participation and opportunities are becoming increasingly concentrated within the same circles, it carries real significance for our school, a public high school with an international department, to host this conference. By opening our doors to middle/high school students, and creating a new gateway into Model United Nations, we believe we can help build a more open and inclusive community for discussion.
